Since VoIP, phone systems use internet to transmit information that means it is exposed to cyber attacks by hackers and other cyber criminals.

Today, we see that cyber criminals have discovered a new way to launch their attacks and scams. They primarily strike the phone systems of particularly small and medium-sized businesses across the U.S and Canada.

It has been reported on and off that hackers have hacked the phone systems of various businesses across the country, scammed them into providing all the contact information of their bank account details, addresses and their personal information including passwords for logins.

Normally, these scammers, as mentioned earlier, normally target smaller regional institutions, which have less scam detecting systems. They hack their phone systems and then call up the victims, pretending to you your bank officials asking vital details, such as bank account number and pin, or posing to be your credit card company officer. This way, they fetch information from them so impishly without getting suspected of being fowl players.

Hackers today are making headlines which tell their heinous adventures of infiltrating companies official phone systems, but this hasn’t been anything new…it occurred 20 years back too…only difference was that they tapped calls but today, there are cyber criminals on lose always looking for a bait. These fraudsters have now become skilled by infiltrating the internet digital barriers and play scamming games on innocent people.

VoIP phone or voice over Internet Protocol has become prone to such attacks as well and it seems to be an ongoing threat and a very serious once for that matter, owing to the current terrorist attacks going on in the world. People are rightly worried about it.

Normally, it has been witnessed that these attacks are more common in the most popular VoIP systems – the Asterisk. Anonymous hackers have even uploaded videos on how to breach the digital Asterisk barriers and hack the entire phone system and so much is being made available on the World Wide Web about how to put this act in action.

With so much information and data being made available on the internet now, millions of people are trying to plan on how to carry this out is becoming easier for them. This way they can even infiltrate the toughest phone systems very easily.

A hacker can very easily hack VoIP phone systems, if secure actions are not taken against it. So, it is important to put up a very strong password, which cannot be guessed by these Voip hackers on the hunt. Make your VoIP data and calls encrypted, this keeps them from being hacked easily, even if the toughest hacker uses all his brains to infiltrate the system, he will never go past this strong barrier.

Technology has developed much faster than hackers have because unlike hackers it has a large profiting market. All we need is to implement that technology. Remember before you are trapped to some dramatic “add campaign” and take the final decision, you must verify what pains and measures that much triumphed VoIP service provider is taking in terms of call security. Don’t forget there are a number of companies, which have been providing 100% problem free internet phone service for years.

So, play wisely, and always stay aware of any such incidents, particularly in case of internet phone systems, keep your anti-virus, anti-spam and malware software active.

Good information and something to keep in mind. I still think businesses over a certain size should stick with conventional phone service.

Well! You did not explain the "certain size" which should stick to conventional phone. Think for a while what would be the result? All the competitors will start providing a strong customer support. They will be able to communicate with each other at low cost.

Stuck with a four times more costly phone service, where your business will stand? This is a world where information and communication are treated as resource not another mean or byproduct of the business. This is why you can't survive without VoIP.

Cyber crimes have been increasing day by day, they must be stopped. Yes, agree that the virus softwares must be active on the phones.

I have a piece of advice for all who are planing to switch over voip. Large companies like vonage etc. are a 24/7 target for the hackers.

You should go for the small companies becoz every one has approximately the same solutions and services but in small companies your conversation would be more secure. Plus they don't have any hidden charges like vonage.

As mentioned in the article a hacker can easily hack a VoIP system if it is not secured properly. It is very important to keep the most updated version of viruses and other security software. Unfortunately many VoIP service providers don't take care of it as needed.

Yes there are many VoIP service providers that are offering the VoIP service with very poor security. This type of service is risky for any businessman. However, there are many VoIP providers that are providing very secure and reliable service also.

Actually, majority of the VoIP service providers are offering very reliable voip service but there are some which are offering very poor service. The fact is that these are the large VoIP service providers which seldom upgrade their antiviruses.

Michael is right. These are the large voip service providers that rarely upgrade their anti viruses and fire wall software. It is perhaps they need a lot of planing before up-gradation of these software. Their large set ups perhaps do not allow regular updates.
